Dear Romania

You know how you need money for infrastructure and general economic improvements? I have an idea for you.

Speed Cameras.

I learned to drive in the UK and even on country roads there is the possibility of a sudden flash and the knowledge that you have points and a fine. Having only started driving in Romania this year the sheer number of crashes and near misses I have witnessed is incredible. I would posit almost all of these could have been prevented if speed limits were enforced.

The UK regulations say:
'The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and 3 penalty points added to your licence. You could be disqualified from driving if you build up 12 or more penalty points within a period of 3 years.'

I predict in Hunedoara county alone if you enforced this you would halve the number of drivers on the road and be able to fund major resurfacing works across the county.

Having spoken to a few friends, the general consensus is that there were speed cameras but the 'law was badly written'. I'm not sure how you can write 'if you go above the speed limit and we catch you we will fine you and possibly take away your licence' badly, however, can I suggest giving it another go?

So, how about it Romania... Speed Cameras?
